First-Place Cowboys Visit Houston Christian on Monday Night
McNeese State will take their show on the road to take on a much-improved Houston Christian squad on Monday Night.
On Saturday Night in a rematch of the 2024 Southland Conference Championship Game, the Cowboys were able to squeak out a win over the Nicholls Colonels 80-71, but it was not all roses on Saturday inside of the Legacy Center. Head Coach Will Wade was not pleased with the effort on Saturday Night.
Will Wade was sure to get that point across in the presser after the game, "We were soft, we won on our talent today" said Wade. The Head Cowboy even went as far as saying “I had to cry like a little baby to the officials because we weren’t physical enough to even get a call.”
Through a few verbal and physical altercations, combined with the effort Wade said no spot was guaranteed and everyone would be on a clean slate, “After today, every spot is open. Had too many guys lose their minds today.” - Wade
As you can see, Wade was not pleased even in a win.
Javohn Garcia led the way and wheeled McNeese to a win down the stretch run with 25 points in Saturday’s game. Garcia scored 20 of those points in the second half, helping the Cowboys secure an 80-71 win in front of a season-high crowd of 4,032.
McNeese (11-5, 5-0 SLC) is riding high on a six-game winning streak, their longest this season. In the win on Saturday over Nicholls, the Cowboys set a school record with 16 straight wins in Southland Conference play, which is also the fourth-longest streak in league history.
On Monday Night, the Cowboys will head to Houston to put their win streak on the line against the Huskies.
Houston Christian comes into the game against McNeese 6-10 overall and 3-2 in Southland Conference play. The Huskies appear to be beginning to find their rhythm under first-year head coach Craig Doty. They’ve won two straight games, including an 81-76 win over UIW on Saturday.
The game is slated to tip off at 7:00 and you can watch all of the action on ESPN+ or over the air on Power 92.1 with Bruce Merchant on the call.
After Monday’s game, McNeese will return home for a rivalry game against Lamar on Saturday, followed by a showdown with Stephen F. Austin next Monday.
