The American League Tops National League for Sixth Consecutive Year

The 2018 Major League All-Star Game was a microcosm of what the game of baseball is evolving into, a ton of home runs. All together we saw ten in the game which set an All-Star Game record and all but one of the runs were powered by those home runs. When it was all said and done the American League defeated the National League in ten innings 8-6 for the sixth straight year. Houston Astros third baseman and former LSU standout, Alex Bregman was named the MVP with his game winning, top of the 10th home run.

It was all home runs all the time and it got started when Justin Verlander told Aaron Judge he was going to go deep and what do you know, he did. He took National League starter Max Schrerzer out of the yard to give the American League a 1-0 lead.

Next, it was Mike Trout's turn for some fireworks as he did damage against a National League East starter as well, this time it was New York Mets starter, Jacob deGROM. 2-0 AL.

In the bottom of the third inning it was time for the NL to strike back and it was the catcher from the Cubs, Wilson Contreras who touched up the Rays Blake Snell for a solo job. 2-1 AL.

From there it would be quiet until the 7th inning when the NL would tie the game on the strength of a solo home run off the bat of Colorado Rockies shortstop, Trevor Story. We were knotted at 2 but it wouldn't stay that way for long.

In the top of the eighth inning the AL would come right back with, you guessed it, another home run, this time it was via Seattle Mariners shortstop, Jean Segura. He came through with a game breaking three-run homer, 5-2 AL.

As we moved to the bottom of the ninth, the NL had gotten a run back in the eight but  the AL still held a 5-3 lead and Seattle's Edwin Diaz was on for the save. After a J.T. Realmuto walk, Cincinnati Reds 2b Scooter Gennett pinch-hit and took an inside fastball and deposited it over the right field wall for a two-run, game tying home run! We were tied at 5 and heading to extra innings.

Once again, it was the American League who would wrangle back control of the game in the top of the 10th inning. Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Ross Stripling was on the hill and he would not fair well. Houston Astros teammates, Alex Bregman and George Springer would go back-to-back powering the AL to a 7-5 lead and they would go onto win 8-6.

Edwin Diaz who blew the save ended up as the winning pitcher, Ross Stripling got the loss, and Blue Jays J.A. Happ recorded the save.
