The New Orleans Saints dropped their 2012 NFL regular season opener on Sunday, falling to the Washington Redskins, 40-32, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

The Redskins outgained the Saints, in terms of total yardage, 464-358, with rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III leading the way.

Griffin, the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner out of Baylor, and the second pick in the NFL Draft last April, completed 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions, while also running for 42 yards.

Another rookie, running back Alfred Morris rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns, while receiver Aldrick Robinson, a second-year pro making his NFL regular-season debut, had a 5-yard touchdown catch among four receptions for 52 yards.

In a losing cause for the Saints, quarterback Drew Brees finished 24-of-52 passing, for 329 yards, with three touchdowns, and two interceptions, while receiver Lance Moore caught six passes for 120 yards, with a touchdown.

With the win, Washington impoves to 1-0 on the year, while New Orleans is 0-1.

The Saints are back in action next Sunday, when they travel to take on the Carolina Panthers.
