“Oversigning” could become a thing of the past in the SEC

In any given year, a Division I school can give out as many as 25 football scholarships.

Yet, for many years, schools "oversigned," meaning they would sign more than 25, knowing that some of them wouldn't qualify academically.  Even if they all qualified, a school could talk a prospective student-athlete into delaying his enrollment until January, a process known as greyshirting.

Two years ago, the Southestern Conference decided to limit the number of players that could be signed to 28.

Now, if SEC Commissioner Mike Slive has his way, oversigning would be done away with all together.

And, the coaches in the league aren't particularly happy about it, according to a story appearing today on espn.com.
