Giants Beat Reds in 10 to Stay Alive in NLDS

Tuesday night, it was all about the pitching.

On a night when the San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds combined for just seven hits, it was a passed ball and an error that made the difference as the Giants stayed alive in the National League Division Series by beating the Reds 2-1 in ten innings.

Cincinnati leads the best of five series, two games to one.  Game four is Wednesday afternoon at the Great American Ballpark.

Buster Posey's leadoff single in the tenth inning got the Giants started off losing pitcher Jonathan Broxton.  Hunter Pence singled Posey to second.  Broxton struck out the next two batters, but a passed ball moved the runners to second and third.  Joaquin Arias then hit a grounder to third, but Scott Rolen bobbled it allowing Posey to score the winning run.

Four Giants pitchers threw five innings of hitless relief to back the start of Ryan Vogelsong.  Sergio Romo, who pitched the final two innings, got the victory.

Meanwhile, the Reds' pitchers did their jobs as well.

Homer Bailey allowed just one run and one hit over seven innings, striking out ten, but didn't get enough support from his teammates and did not figure in the decision.

The Giants' only run off Bailey came without benefit of a hit.  Gregor Blanco was hit by a pitch to open the inning and Brandon Crawford walked.  Vogelsong's sacrifice moved the runners up and Angel Pagan's sacrifice fly got the run home to tie the game.

The only run for the Reds came in the first inning on an RBI single by Jay Bruce.
