Cajuns, Green Wave to Renew Gridiron Rivalry

The University of Louisiana and Tulane University today announced an agreement to renew their football rivalry which has been dormant for the last decade.

The two teams will meet at Cajun Field on October 6, 2012, with the Cajuns slated to return the trip to the Louisiana Superdome on October 8, 2016.

“When we came to UL, one of our first priorities was to establish a dialogue with Tulane in hopes of getting a football series worked out,” Interim Director of Athletics Scott Farmer said in making the announcement. “Because of scheduling commitments, it’s taken a while, but we’re excited that the two teams have re-established a football relationship.”

Tulane and Louisiana last met on the gridiron in the 2000 season when the Green Wave escaped with a 38-37 win at Cajun Field.

Tulane leads the all-time series 21-4, but all four Cajun wins have come in the last nine meetings.  The last Cajuns win in the series came in 1995, when Jake Delhomme found Brandon Stokley on a 37-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to give the Cajuns a 32-28 win.

All but two of the 23 meetings in the series have been played in New Orleans.  The Green Wave won the first sixteen meetings between the two teams, a streak finally broken in 1988 when Brian Mitchell and the Cajuns rolled to a 51-34 win.  That victory started a streak where the Cajuns won four of five meetings between the two schools.

“This is good for football in the state of Louisiana,” Farmer said.  “This is good for the Ragin’ Cajuns and the Green Wave.  This is good for the fans of both schools.  And, we hope it’s the rebirth of regular competition between the two schools on the football field.”

Louisiana still has one opening left on its 2012 schedule.  The Cajuns will be adding one more home game, probably against an FCS school to complete the schedule.
